Delicious Roast Beast

That’s right, I said beast! It’s a family tradition, after all…

I love roast beast, it’s actually one of my favourite meals, come to think of it. It’s right up there with a turkey dinner with all the fixin’s and pizza. Yummo!

One of the bloggers over at Wisebread wrote a great post on roast beast, and how you can get several meals out of one good cook up.

Roast beef is an excellent way to get a number of good, hearty meals on the cheap (Because you’re cooking it so slowly, you can purchase the cheaper cuts of meat). Wisebread lists making the roast beef itself, hot beef sandwiches, sloppy joes, quesadillas and soup, which are all fantastic ideas. Traditionally my family just keeps on eating the roast beef AS roast beef, though sometimes we make the hot sandwiches, too. Oh, and cold beef sammies.

My mom usually makes this meal in the colder months when I come home for a visit, and we invite my grandpa over, too. It’s one of those meals that always has good memories attached!

My perfect roast beef meal is this:
-Roast beast
-Roasted carrots & onions
-Steamed broccoli
-Mashed potatoes and gravy
-Grandpa’s homemade onion bread & butter
-Grandpa’s homemade red wine
-Dessert!

What’s your ideal combination?

  1. Thanks so much for the link! I love roast beast… and appreciate eating it just as it is for days. Thanks for making me way too hungry before noon!

  2. Mmm, I’m a traditionalist so I go for: Roast beef, roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, roast carrot and parsnip, yorkshire puddings, gravy.
Sticky toffee pudding for dessert! Ideally I shouldn’t be able to move for at least 3 hours.

  3. Ginger, This is classic comfort food to the max. A few years ago I started doing thanksgiving dinner, to relieve my parents of the duty they’ve done me for 28 years, I like to keep it classic, but update it, Along with a roast I like to do Savoury corn pudding, Kale or Collard greens, and have recently come across an incredible roast potato recipe from Heston Blumenthal.

  4. We never did the traditional roast beef dinner growing up, I think because of my French Canadian heritage. My all time favorite meal that my mom makes is spare ribs, mushroom fried rice and a pineapple/pistachio dessert.

I bet you it’s not anyone else’s traditional meal!!
