Swag Update

According to the poll I had a little while ago, most of you want me to write more about the advertising world. Since I got such a great response on my posts about all the swag I get, I thought I’d dish what I got this week!

Surprise gift: We’re running a test campaign with a new supplier. I got an email from the CEO saying he’d sent my colleague and I each a small gift. We haven’t received them yet, but I’ll bet its good… this was the guy who gave us both $100 gift certificates to Oasis Spa for Christmas, when we weren’t even clients of his yet!

Laptop tote & spa-style terry robe: A newspaper came in this week to present some new readership data. They had a draw for a few prizes, and I walked away with this really classy lady’s laptop case (that actually fits my widescreen laptop, hallelujah!) that looks like a leather purse. It was stuffed with this oh-so-soft cotton terry-cloth white robe. “Newspaper Name” was stitched on the front in silver, but it still looks awesome and is very comfy. They also threw in a little keychain that is a digital frame. You can load 18 digital pictures onto it and display them whenever you want. On a keychain of all things!

VIP Movie tickets: Cineplex came in today and not only fed us lunch, but the interactive rep and I got in a conversation about movies and how I never go anymore. Apparently some theatres now have VIP sections with huge leather chairs, an age limit, and waiters to bring you your snacks. Also no line-ups. These are available to the public at extra cost and have to be reserved. He offered to give me some tickets to try it out! 😉 Way cool. I wonder if he was trying to pick me up though? That happens to us females from time to time… oh well. I’ll still go!

Evil Dead: The Musical Tickets: O. M. G. You guys know how I love this musical! A girl at work passed on an invite to Metro News’ relaunch party next week, and they’re hosting it at the Diesel Playhouse and we get to see the show, too! *squeals* I’m excited! I’ve requested Splatter Zone tickets but I’ll just be happy to go again!

Random food: Several lunches and breakfasts were brought in for us this week, and a box of cookies, too!

LOULOU Shopping Event: Tomorrow I’m off to an exclusive LOULOU Magazine event with Dermalogica. Again, this was offered to the public in their most recent issue. I’m not sure if it qualifies as swag since we each have to pay $10 to get in… but we were invited to it first? And we’ll get goodie bags there, too. Will have to post about that when I get home tomorrow.

So that’s what I scooped up this week, folks. Next week is fairly low-key other than the Evil Dead event and YouTube is coming in (that may prove interesting!). There are always new things being added to my calendar, though. Spring/summer is popular for hosting parties and all the TV upfronts will start to happen, so hopefully I will have more to post about!

I hope you’ve enjoyed your glimpse into my world…just remember, it’s not all glam and free stuff, I work like a slave, too!

Best Health Event

So! I am writing this and I must say I look absolutely gorgeous, dahhhling!

Why the big head, you ask?

Well my friends, I just got back from the Best Health Magazine launch at Muzik Club. Let me tell you, that place is pretty damn swanky! Apparently all the stars hang out there when they’re in TO.

This was an ad event, Reader’s Digest is launching their new mag Best Health, so of course they had to throw a big partay. We got these pyramid-shaped invites with a tube of scrumptious Cake Milk-Made Velveteen Hand Creme, a sign of good things to come!

So the club is huge and gorgeous. I could even imagine a really cool wedding happening there. I’d say it’s at least as cool as This Is London in my book. Among the fabulous seating areas and multiple premium bars (open bar, BTW!) they had little sections set up to represent each of the content sections in the mag. They had some TV chef dude making our hors d’oeuvres (Chef Finklestein I think???) in one section, a yoga platform and instructors in the other (if you missed today’s workout, of course!) a juice bar in another and this cool custom t-shirt booth in another. I got a pink shirt with “I snort when I laugh” written on it (you could choose from some pre-set phrases, I should have gone with “Hot sex burns more calories”!)

In the back there is also a permanent Stila lounge. Apparently every Saturday when the club is open you can pop in for a hair and makeup touch-up. Ladies only. Today they had a full crew for the event, so I got my hair done in these incredible curls, and then had my makeup totally redone. Oh. Mah. Gawd. I looked incredible!

Oh, if only I didn’t have this wish for privacy on the internet! I’d post some photos for sure!

Even though my name is Ginger, I’ve got very light natural blonde hair. It’s also luxuriously long (tee hee!) so when the dude curled it like that I got compliments out the wazoo. The makeup was stellar, too. I was wearing an ultramarine blue shirt, so the artist complimented it with pinks on my face. I was the picture of prettiness! I usually think I’m pretty average-to-ugly looking, so it was nice to actually feel beautiful for the night. Everyone I talked to complimented me on my look and I wasn’t even fishing for compliments! …That’s when you know you look good!

Anyway, the business guys made a couple of speeches and got Jessica Holmes from Royal Canadian Air Farce up to crack some jokes and talk about the magazine. Afterwards I went over and got a photo with her and chatted for a bit. She’s a nice lady, and pregnant now, too!

When I left I got some goody bags, and since so many people were interested in my last post about swag, I thought I’d list what I got this time:

– REALLY nice tote bag branded with Best Health
– Evian water
– Nature Valley bar
– copy of the mag
– scrubby spa mitt (nice!)
– sample of Nina Ricci’s new perfume L’Air du Temps (it’s ok but not really my style)
– Stila lip pencil
– Stila “Petal Infusions calming eye cream”
– Promo card thing: bring it into Sephora and get a free Stila sample

All in all it wasn’t a bad haul. Not the best I’ve gotten, but not bad overall.

They didn’t spring for cab chits this time, but I had one from work so I was fine.

So there you have it: an ad event in a nutshell! Maybe in the future I’ll post about some of the other events I’ve been to… would any of you be interested in something like that?

I <3 Swag Bags

I’ve been getting some free stuff at work lately, so I thought I’d dedicate a post to some of the cool things I receive as part of my job. I get asked about it quite a bit.

Most of you have probably seen me mention that I work in advertising/media. My job basically entails taking a creative concept that the brand is working on, and figuring out the best ways to get it out to their target market. This involves choosing the media vehicle, such as TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, internet, billboards, events, grassroots marketing, word of mouth, posters, transit ads, sponsoring events/teams/days, etc.

Think of the brand logos and ads you see around you every day, and you’ll know that someone like me developed the plan to get that logo/ad there, and have YOU see it. Oh yes, dear readers. There is a very real possibility that today you fell prey to my ingenious advertising placements! Muahahahaha! Seriously, though. If you live in Canada, you have definitely seen the projects I have worked on, I can guarantee it. Anyone in other countries…well… you have probably seen stuff my international colleagues have had a hand in. Cool, eh?
There’s a lot more boring stuff involved with my job that I won’t bother to mention, so I’ll stick to the fun stuff. Because I get to play with millions of dollars all those media choices (magazines, TV stations, etc.) really want my business. This means that they’ll try to woo me with free lunches, swag bags, days at the spa, dinners and lavish parties with celebrities and random gifts throughout the year. It’s pretty frickin’ awesome, my friends.

I used to work in a different position at my old job, and it seems like I got more stuff then compared to what I’m doing now, but I think it’s just because I don’t know as many people on this side of the business yet. Anyway, I thought I’d get onto the cool things I’ve received over the years.

This month alone I have been fed breakfast, lunch and dinner several times, received a couple of pens, notebooks, a high-end hand lotion & scented candle, gourmet cookies and chocolates, gift card to Winners, copious amounts of alcohol, tickets to a VIP concert, baseball tickets, gone to an exclusive shopping party, won a $100 tech backpack and dynamo flashlight and a nice travel mug. Not a bad haul so far.

I also have some more parties coming up which I will probably get some more cool swag bags from. *Squee!*

Some of the more interesting things I’ve received over the years:
– PlayStation Portable system
– Portable DVD player
– Season 4 of 24 on DVD
– Glass wine decanter
– Glass water decanter
– Random gourmet maple syrup products
– $100 spa gift certificates
– Fine wines & cookbooks
– Oven mitts (Hell’s Kitchen promotion, baby!)
– Brian the dog bobble head from Family Guy
– Mugs, mugs and more mugs
– Popcorn bowl and snuggly blanket
– More candy/cookies/chocolate than I can count, or eat!
– Freeze-dried ice cream saucer
– Random DVDs
– Martini shaker & glasses
– Box seats for several concerts and sporting events
– Jackets, hats, scarves, umbrellas & shirts galore (I average 3(!!) umbrellas a year…)

There’s probably more things that I can’t remember, but that gives you a good idea of the weird and sometimes really nice stuff we media people get. This doesn’t even include the parties and events we get to go to. I’ll make a separate post for those 😉

So tell me, readers: What do you think about my job? Do you think being overworked and underpaid is a fair trade for all the perks I get? What do you think about the items themselves?

And what I would really like to know is: what kind of perks do you guys get at your jobs? Is it worth it? Have you ever received anything either totally luxe, or so random you don’t know what to do with it?

Do tell!
