I mentioned ages ago that I would start doing unpaid reviews on products or services that I thought needed to be reviewed… so here is the first!
I am totally in love with this new mascara by Avon.
Supershock Mascara ($9.99) is their newest mascara and comes in your basic colours (navy, brown, black & black/brown) and promises the following:
– Unique microfibres expand & plump lashes for unprecedented volume
– Thickening base coat and volumizing mascara in only one step
– Flexible bristles coat and separate lashes for a precise look that’s bolder than ever
– Does not glob!
And I have to say, I’m sold! At first blush this mascara actually scared me; it comes in a giant tube which is much fatter than your average mascara tube. The wand is also super-sized. The closest comparison would be the diameter of a Bic pen. I have no idea why they made it so large, but it seems to do the trick! After the initial fright of having something that large so close to my eye, I soon saw how good a job it does at making my lashes lovely.
It goes on clean and easy, and separates my lashes without clumping or gobbing. Far superior to my previous L’Oreal mascara. The formula is easy to build up for a more dramatic look, and has minimal flaking even though it includes microfibres. I don’t know if this is the right way to describe a mascara, but I felt…comfortable putting it on.
I was really pleased with the results, my eyes seemed brighter and more open, my lashes plumper, longer and more feminine. And it’s easy to take off at the end of the day. My last mascara would cling and clump so badly to my lashes that I could hardly clean it off, and it would actually pull some of my eyelashes out with it when removed. Ugh.
This is a good mascara for women with sensitive eyes or contact-lens wearers. I have extremely sensitive eyes and have not experienced any irritation in my 2 weeks using the product.
I would recommend this mascara to anyone. For the price, results and ease of application it is definitely worth it. I’ve tried the higher-end mascaras (Clinique, Stila, MAC, Lancome, etc.) but this simple Avon innovation trumps them in all areas.
The single drawback is that it is only available through your local Avon lady. If only I could pick it up at the drugstore!
Spring must be in the air… I am finding myself oddly attracted to pink again!
So I went with my coworker N to blow our cards on something frivolous. We were even lucky enough to finish our day by 3pm! (however it started at 7am… ugh).
So what did I spend my money on, you ask? Why PINK stuff, o’ course!
Earlier I posted about getting my makeup done at an ad event in the Stila lounge at Muzik Club. I really loved the look, so the artist wrote down some of the colours he used. I’ve been meaning to pick them up and try them out, but they’re just so darned expensive! Like, holy-cow expensive! And since I’m in money-saving mode I decided to forgo on the fancy beauty treat.
Here’s what I got:
These two items came to a whopping $66 after taxes… but since I had the $50 gift card, I only paid about $16 of that… and therefore am not overspent on my beauty budget challenge that Krystal is hosting!
I’m wearing it right now with a layer of Fireflies on top… it looks awesome! The irridescent Fireflies just adds that extra dimension to the matte colour. Very nice.
Anyway, that was an extra $11.25, but even then I’m still within my Beauty Budget Challenge amount of $60. I have spent a total of $27.25 so far.
Yay for pink! Now I’m off to bed to recoup after my insanely long day!
Why the big head, you ask?
This was an ad event, Reader’s Digest is launching their new mag Best Health, so of course they had to throw a big partay. We got these pyramid-shaped invites with a tube of scrumptious Cake Milk-Made Velveteen Hand Creme, a sign of good things to come!
So the club is huge and gorgeous. I could even imagine a really cool wedding happening there. I’d say it’s at least as cool as This Is London in my book. Among the fabulous seating areas and multiple premium bars (open bar, BTW!) they had little sections set up to represent each of the content sections in the mag. They had some TV chef dude making our hors d’oeuvres (Chef Finklestein I think???) in one section, a yoga platform and instructors in the other (if you missed today’s workout, of course!) a juice bar in another and this cool custom t-shirt booth in another. I got a pink shirt with “I snort when I laugh” written on it (you could choose from some pre-set phrases, I should have gone with “Hot sex burns more calories”!)
In the back there is also a permanent Stila lounge. Apparently every Saturday when the club is open you can pop in for a hair and makeup touch-up. Ladies only. Today they had a full crew for the event, so I got my hair done in these incredible curls, and then had my makeup totally redone. Oh. Mah. Gawd. I looked incredible!
Oh, if only I didn’t have this wish for privacy on the internet! I’d post some photos for sure!
Even though my name is Ginger, I’ve got very light natural blonde hair. It’s also luxuriously long (tee hee!) so when the dude curled it like that I got compliments out the wazoo. The makeup was stellar, too. I was wearing an ultramarine blue shirt, so the artist complimented it with pinks on my face. I was the picture of prettiness! I usually think I’m pretty average-to-ugly looking, so it was nice to actually feel beautiful for the night. Everyone I talked to complimented me on my look and I wasn’t even fishing for compliments! …That’s when you know you look good!
Anyway, the business guys made a couple of speeches and got Jessica Holmes from Royal Canadian Air Farce up to crack some jokes and talk about the magazine. Afterwards I went over and got a photo with her and chatted for a bit. She’s a nice lady, and pregnant now, too!
When I left I got some goody bags, and since so many people were interested in my last post about swag, I thought I’d list what I got this time:
– REALLY nice tote bag branded with Best Health
– Evian water
– Nature Valley bar
– copy of the mag
– scrubby spa mitt (nice!)
– sample of Nina Ricci’s new perfume L’Air du Temps (it’s ok but not really my style)
– Stila lip pencil
– Stila “Petal Infusions calming eye cream”
– Promo card thing: bring it into Sephora and get a free Stila sample
All in all it wasn’t a bad haul. Not the best I’ve gotten, but not bad overall.
They didn’t spring for cab chits this time, but I had one from work so I was fine.
So there you have it: an ad event in a nutshell! Maybe in the future I’ll post about some of the other events I’ve been to… would any of you be interested in something like that?
Coincidentally, this is the best-selling colour of red out there. This photo really doesn’t do it justice. Maybe once I clean my nails up I’ll take a photo to show you how really gorgeous it is!
*edit* Here’s a photo of the colour on my nails… this is two coats. I needed something extra in the photo in terms of visual interest, so I placed my hand against my pewter purse so you could see how fabulous the colour really is! OPI, I love you! (Unfortunately the resolution isn’t good enough to catch the subtle shimmer and shine, but let me tell you the colour is so rich you could lick it!)
Anyway, what I was going to say is that I’ve just updated my money goals, and a revised list of Bridesmaid’s Costs is on it’s way! I think it would be a neat exercise to keep track of just how much this wedding will cost me, from initial estimates through to actual costs!
Ooooh man. Boring side of advertising, what have you done to me? Numbers! Bah!
I stole this off of Fabulously Broke because it’s a funny little quiz!
You’re supposed to fill it in to see how self obsessed you are… but when I read it I didn’t think it was that bad! Doesn’t most of this stuff just equate to good personal hygiene and care of one’s appearance?
Hmm. Maybe all of my answers seem normal to me because I work in advertising… a beauty and youth-based industry to rival the fashion and art world!
