*sigh* When will the spammers ever learn?

This week I’ve received two emails of a dubious nature, both wanting to do a “link exchange” with me on my site.

I know it’s a scam. They’re not fooling anyone.

How do I know this? Well check out one of the emails below that I just received this morning:

from Shelly Brown
to Ginger Corsair

subject Link Exchange Three Way to Optimize site

Hi Sir / Admin
I am Shine, I found your site very informative and valuable while searching through Search Engines..
I would like to become your real link partner so we can do optimization for our sites, which would be beneficial in the long run.
I believe in good quality links and the link should be from the content or article exchange and must be 3 way, this helps to get good value to the site
& trust..

So please let me know, when you will become partners and from when do we start our deal.

Trust me to be your true partner..:)
I will wait for your reply.. ASAP

Its Not a Spam.

—————————-

Well now, despite the mention that “Its Not a Spam” at the bottom, it totally is.

Let me point out the giant FAIL in this email:

  • It was sent at an ungodly hour in the morning
  • I, a FEMALE named Ginger am addressed by Sir/Admin. Duh, anyone that actually visited the site knows that I am female.
  • She wants to do a link exchange but doesn’t provide a link to her site!
  • My site is not informative and valuable. Second way to tell they never even visited the site
  • Random &trust in there… coupled with crappy English & composition tells me this person is not a native English speaker, and is most likely a foreign scammer. Stereotyping? Yes. But I’m also right.
  • Also see: Random Capitalization Of Words
  • They assume right off the bat that we will become partners and start a deal. A deal?! Doing what? You never even included your link!
  • The whole email reads like it was stolen from a “blogging 101” post from somewhere and made to sound as if someone actually wrote it. It makes me giggle.

I suppose I could go on and on about this email and the other one I got, but it’s just too much work. I’m sure all bloggers get crap like this from time to time.

My beef is that these people are just fishing for links. If someone approaches me for a genuine link exchange, I’m totally happy to consider it. But it has to be a good fit and a real person writing to me.

I’ll bet dear old Shelly Brown is a real person… but managed to get her gmail account hacked.

So have you received any ridiculous emails like this lately? Emails that don’t include the link for link exchanges, or that want you to “promote” some retarded product that don’t have any benefit for you? Share your funny scammer email stories with us in the comments!

Yay for Camping!

I’m heading down to South-Western Ontario for a Festival which involves camping… wish me luck!

I’ll be gone from today to Sunday with no internet, and I’ve been too busy to schedule any suitable posts, so I’m afraid there will be no posting til Sunday at the earliest. Sorry!

I’m looking forward to camping but am a little apprehensive… it’s been ages since I’ve done it, and never on my own! I won’t know a lot of people at the festival so I’m a little scared…

I know that I will make friends easily and have a good time, but I’ve still got butterflies! Silly, I know.

Anyway, I’ll report back on where I went and what happened when I get home again!

Til then, please remember that I am still taking entries for both July giveaways right now. You can win yourself an Amazon gift certificate, or a dozen gorgeous custom cupcakes!

See you soon!

July Giveaway: Custom Cupcakes!

It’s that time again!

Time for me to tell you about the next prize up for grabs and to open entries! Remember, you can still enter to win all the previous prizes until July 29th!

This week I am giving away something absolutely beautiful, and duhlicious to boot! Madalina from Duh-Licious is an amazing gal I met at a blogger event a few months ago. She is an incredible baker and makes wonderful custom cupcakes for all occasions! You can check out some of her creations here.

Madalina has supplied me with a gift certificate for one dozen cupcakes to give away; that’s a $40 value! I’m so excited to give this away, it coincides with my half-birthday which is SO much better than my real birthday! Yay for July!

Now, one thing I do have to mention is that: This contest is only open to people residing in the GTA. If you are not part of the Greater Toronto Area, unfortunately you cannot win this prize. The reason comes down to transportation: Madalina is located in Toronto, so the prize must go to a local for pickup.

Now that that is out of the way… let me just say I am SO jealous of the winner! I mean, look at these fantastic cupcakes, they’re veritable works of art! It was tough trying to decide which photos to include in this post because there are so many fantastic examples. I’m drooling as I type this. Apparently Madalina even enters competitions and goes to conventions. 1) There are conventions?!?!? 2) WHERE!?!?!? 3) Nom nom nom nom nom

Anyway, onto the deets…

Duh-Licious Custom Cupcake Giveaway

The entry rules are the same as last week. Please remember to leave a comment for each individual task you completed–those are your entries!

There are a maximum of four (4) entries you can receive. For each of the below methods, please leave a separate comment with proof and your email (with spaces so the spiders can’t read it is fine). I will be selecting the winner using random.org.

1st Prize: Amazon Gift Certificate

This coming weekend is July the 4th, Independence Day for the United States. Most Canadians don’t celebrate this holiday, but I am not most Canadians.

I’m actually half ‘n half; I have Canadian citizenship by birthright, and American citizenship by bloodright. Growing up it was a mix of the two cultures. My dad’s side is really Canadian, whereas my mom’s side is really American. I’ve got some great traditions and also some weird quirks from both sides.

I alternate between saying “zed” and “zee” all the time, and somehow the terms “y’all” and “eh?” work themselves into my speech quite often! I feel at home in both countries and have family in both countries.

Today, (Canada Day) I’ll be celebrating at a BBQ with a good friend. This weekend I’ll be celebrating Independence day with all my American-blooded family with another good old BBQ and family games.

In honour of these occasions, I wanted to be able to offer a prize opportunity to both my Canadian and American readers. (Yes my American friends, I know you get shafted a lot in terms of prizes on here, sorry! Hope this makes it up to ya!)

To that end, I’ve chosen an Amazon gift certificate to give-away; I love love LOVE reading and am on Amazon all the time, so it seemed like a good idea to share something with you that I love.
This is actually the only prize that I am paying for out of pocket, I hope whoever wins it enjoys reading as much as I do!

Amazon Gift Certificate Give-Away
OPEN TO: Canadian and US Residents

The winner of this prize will receive either a $10 USD or $15 CAD online gift certificate to Amazon.com or .ca.

There are a maximum of four (4) entries you can receive. For each of the below methods, please leave a separate comment with proof and your email (with spaces so the spiders can’t read it is fine). I will be selecting the winner using random.org.

  • 1 Entry: Tweet about my blog relaunch and/or celebration prizes, please list the URL of the Tweet in the comments, and/or @gingercorsair me in it.
  • 1 Entry: Leave a comment telling me whether you’re Canadian or American and what you love about your country!

Winners will be announced on Wednesday, July 28th.

GOOD LUCK! 😀

Celebrate the Summer and Win Prizes!

To thank all of my valued and loyal readers (and the new ones too!) and to celebrate my big comeback I decided to pull some strings and call in some favours to do something special.

So what does special mean to me?

PRIZES!!!!

If you’ve been keeping up with my Twitter feed (@gingercorsair, y’all!) you’d know that I have been working tirelessly to make a big splash and get some cool prizes to give away to my readers. With the help of some fantastic individuals and PR reps I have been able to secure 4 prizes that you can win; one per week for the month of July!

July has some really awesome things going for it, and lots of opportunities to celebrate. It starts out with Canada Day ( and the relaunch!) on July 1st. Following immediately after is another holiday close to my heart (being half American and all); Independence Day on July 4th.

The next reason to celebrate? My half-birthday, of course! 😉 hehe as a kid, having a January birthday sucked, so I would always hold the party on my half birthday, July 14th!

Last, but certainly not least is the fact that July is the quintessential summer month! School is out, summer vacations start, the weather is beautiful and sunny, and there’s a BBQ every weekend! If that ain’t a reason to celebrate, I don’t know what is!

With all these great reasons to celebrate, I thought it natural to have some prizes as the icing on the summer berry cake!

So here’s the deal:

In exchange for helping me spread the word about the blog, you’ll get multiple chances to enter to win each of the prizes! Full details will be released each week as I put up a post about the particular prize. Most prizes are for Canadians only, but I have made sure to include one for my American readers too, ‘cause I loves ya!

Here’s a rundown of the prizes to get you excited:

July 1st: A snazzy gift certificate to Amazon.ca or .com from yours truly! (Open to Canadians and Americans)

July 8th: Help me celebrate my half-birthday with a gift certificate for a dozen gourmet cupcakes from Duh-Licious! (Open to GTA residents)

July 15th: Get in the mood with a His-n-Hers gift pack including lube, bathrobes and chocolates courtesy of K-Y® BRAND personal lubricants! (Open to Canadians)

July 22nd: Cool down this summer with a perfect Tom Collins drink from a bar kit courtesy of Bombay Sapphire! (Open to Canadians)

Stay tuned, the first prize becomes open for entries later today!

A Triumphant Return

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes… I have returned with a fresh new look and outlook!

As many of you know, I encountered some problems when my blogging life was exposed in my real life. It caused me a lot of trouble and was completely unnecessary, in my opinion. I was in hot water at my job and facing a possible termination, but luckily sense prevailed and I am still gainfully employed.

I will not mention the party that was involved; suffice to say they knew me in a professional capacity, discovered I was a blogger also, then used my personal and (what I thought was) confidential information against me. The ironic thing was that they really just ended up biting the hand that feeds them–I’m not sure what they were hoping to accomplish by getting me fired. Some of my friends on here know who I’m talking about.
As a result of this breach of privacy and tresspass, I had to shut down my personal blog for a while. Once I was in the clear and decided to continue blogging, I used the downtime to whip things into shape.

Of note:
  • I got a new layout. Do you like it?
  • I tried to streamline everything
  • I blew away the budget tracker section. I’m not sure how comfortable I feel about sharing that stuff now
  • I improved the Contact Ginger section
  • I added disclaimer and disclosure documents to cover my ass. Please be sure to read them before continuing on this blog.

I will be posting some tips and my thoughts on internet security for bloggers in the future. I don’t want anyone else to have to go through the hell that I did.

One thing I would also like to mention is that I was astounded by the amount of positive feedback and support I received once people realized the blog was shut down. I can’t describe how warm and loved it made me feel–we truly are a blogging community. So many of you reached out and asked what happened, and also offered your condolences. That outpouring from our community is a large part of why I have decided to march on and continue writing in the face of adversity.

A special thank you goes out to the following bloggers who were kind enough to post my message on their blogs; informing our audiences of my situation:

Krystal of Give Me Back My Five Bucks
FB of Fabulously Broke
Mama Bear of I’ve Got A Little Space To Fill
Canadian Saver of Saving4Later

Ladies, you are truly wonderful. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Moving forward, things will be much the same as they were before. I’m looking to expand a little, perhaps doing some guest posts, hosting some guest posts, entering more carnivals, reviewing more stuff and setting up partnerships with other blogs. If you’re interested in doing something with me, gimme a shout!

Most importantly, I’m going to try and write more. Not being able to post, even for a short time was very difficult for me. This blog, while popular, still remains my personal journal. It’s an outlet for my thoughts and rants and dreams; a place to nuture my creativity. Being unable to write in it and get feedback was incredibly stressful and made me appreciate just how much it has come to mean to me in my life. And how much all my readers and fellow bloggers mean to me.

I missed you, guys.

I think this is my cue to sign off–I’m starting to get all mushy inside!

Thanks for sticking with me, and I’ll see you on the flip side!
